Job Responsibilities:

The Agricultural Specialist will manage operations at the Safford Agricultural Center under the Director’s supervision, contributing to research and agricultural production. Responsibilities include:

  1. Agricultural Operations & Farming Activities:

    • Irrigation, planting, cultivation, and harvesting of field crops.
    • Fertilizer and pesticide application, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
    • Operating and maintaining farm machinery such as tractors and cotton pickers.
  2. Equipment & Machinery Maintenance:

    • Routine servicing, minor repairs, and maintenance of farm vehicles and machinery.
    • Ensuring the proper functioning of irrigation systems and farm equipment.
  3. Facility & Grounds Maintenance:

    • Performing landscaping, weeding, and painting duties.
    • Maintaining the overall appearance and operational efficiency of the SAC facility.
  4. Financial Management & Procurement:

    • Using a departmental purchasing card for acquiring supplies and tools.
    • Managing and documenting expenses related to crop production and equipment maintenance.
  5. Compliance & Safety Oversight:

    • Ensuring workplace safety and compliance with safety protocols for farm operations and equipment use.
  6. Research & Community Engagement:

    • Supporting outreach efforts and engaging with local agricultural communities.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Agricultural Knowledge: Expertise in farming techniques, soil science, and crop management.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with farm machinery and chemical application tools.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and oral communication abilities.
  • Time Management: Ability to efficiently complete tasks with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Experience: At least five years of relevant agricultural experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required.
  • CDL: Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • On-Site Living: The role requires the employee to live on-site.

  • Experience in Cotton Farming: Knowledge of cotton cultivation and harvesting.
